We were recently on the Future Radio segment Songbook talking about the Reynard City Playlists, music that personally influenced me when Reynard City with Keith Packer. I should say this is the music that helped me when writing Vibes/AK Girl and Sal/Wondervixen, though I have also included some suggestions from fans and fellow artists as well (also should say my taste doesn’t necessarily reflect the rest of the team, just what I would pick for the characters).
From the Vibes and Sal playlists, Keith Packer picked out three tracks that I talked about- you can find out more by listening to the Soundcloud link below!
We have a selection of tracks on the two playlists. Some are from the comic (such as Dan Wright and Morgan Straugham Comnick doing guest vocals on the AK Girl v Squirmy rap battle, Keelock Comedy’s Maybe Someday Wondervixen and Hyper Rob ballad), but mostly they are songs that reflect the characters.
For example a lot of the ones on Vibes’ playlist are very upbeat, or dance tracks that reflect her role as a DJ. One of those tracks was Groove Is In The Heart by Dee-Lite, as I was thinking about what would be good “pop song trailer” music, and I realised that the off-beat trippiness combined with the fun and dance just seemed to work, plus I liked the idea of her fighting bad guys to this track!
With Sal’s playlist, we wanted it to be closer to her. For those of you who know the story of the comic, you know this is someone who is more reserved than Vibes, and has a tendency to bottle up her emotions (leading to one Twitter exchange where she was harshly referred to as “emo funsponge”.)
Oddly enough I included Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 on there before I saw Deadpool 2, which has a very different context! The range with her music is a bit broader but a couple are direct references to her personality, such as Shakespeare’s Sister’s Stay and The Buzzcocks’ Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t Have Fallen In Love With)
You can see the playlist below, let us know what you think!
If you have any tracks to recommend to Vibes or Sal (preferably keep them PG13/12A!) then follow them @therealakgirl or @Wondervixen and tweet suggestions, comment below or email email@example.com.
Once again a big thank you to Keith Packer and Future Radio for featuring us, and of course to all the incredible people that backed us and supported our Indiegogo campaign (read more about that here)
